Welcome to West Cowichan, B.C. Canada.
West Cowichan known as Cowichan Lake. To the first inhabitants of this westernmost area of the Cowichan Valley, and long, long before the first white explorers are recorded to have passed through in the late 1850s, it was ‘Kaatza’–the ‘large lake’.

Some accounts credit pioneer William Robertson with being the first white man to set eyes on Cowichan Lake, some time after his arrival on Vancouver Island in the late 1860s. However, it’s a matter of record that, in September 1857, colonial surveyor Joseph D. Pemberton, acting upon instructions from Gov. James Douglas, explored the unknown territory between Cowichan Bay and Nitinat on the west coast. Six years later, Island explorer Robert Brown recorded in his journal that he “engaged Kakalatza, a chief of (Somena) tribe, to accompany us to the great (Cowichan) Lake”.
